Owl Visit

This little screech owl dropped by today. Isn't he a cute little fellow?
This year is speeding by. Soon it will be Thanksgiving! I am not really looking forward to the Holidays. Hopefully they pass by in a blur. I hope you all enjoy your Holiday if I don't post again before then.

Fall Has Arrived

It has been cool here in the mornings and evenings. The days are getting shorter. I am happy to see the cooler temperatures but rain would be nice.
A week ago I woke up to knee pain. Unknown how that happened but it was terrible working all week. Today it seems a little bit better so I am hoping it is on the mend. It is hard getting older with all the things that seem to go wrong all the time. To top that off I had a Dentist appointment too. That went well though, I just hate going. So I am looking forward to a new week. I hope you are doing well.

Recent Rescue

A Redtail Hawk spent the night Friday night. We then took him to the local wildlife rescue shelter. He could not fly. Not sure what was wrong. I did not see any sign of injury but apparently they have soft tissue in their wings that can get injured easily. I am not a fan of these birds since they do catch my chickens/ducks but I guess everything deserves a chance(-: It did however grab me twice with it's talons. It did not pierce the skin which was very lucky for me. Just squeezed very hard around my arm and stomach. It felt like the skin was pierced. I was able to pry its talons apart.(-:
Anyhow, I gave him water and fed him some tasty venison which he seemed to enjoy. I think part of his problem was he was dehydrated and hungry. The lady that rescues these birds said she would keep him in a quiet place, hydrate him and feed him until he could fly again. Yay...probably be back later to eat one of my chickens. Ugh! (-:

Mystery Flower

Not sure what this is. It came up by itself. I like the leaves so far but I am sure it is a weed. Can't wait to see what the flower looks like when it opens.(-:

A Bright Spot On A Smoky Day

That is where I headed yesterday to escape the smoke that blankets the area where I live. We headed up the hill to my favorite plant sale (Simply Plants) where I purchased some new Echinaceas and a Coreopsis for my garden.(-:
It was nice to see Yvette and Michelle again too(-: I can't wait to go back for the next plant sale(-:

This morning while walking the dogs I saw this interesting log. I thought it looked like a face.(-: It was a crispy 54 degrees today. I think Fall is coming soon.(-:

Oh Deer

Well first it was the grasshoppers...then the snails...then the heat...and now we have deer.

I understand they are hungry and there is nothing else for them to eat around here, but come on,... my hibiscus? They were looking so pretty too.

In other news...there are fires burning all around us and it is very smoky here. Not a good time to go outside.
Well enjoy the rest of your week!

Check In With Captain Jack

I just wanted to let all my fans know I am back to normal after that horrid rattlesnake bite. I thought you would like to see a picture to prove I am still alive and kicking.

I did finish off the snake as you might say. No one bites Captain Jack and lives. Although I have learned that rattlesnakes are not worth messing with. Or, I need to be faster next time? We'll see...for now I have to pretend I am done with them or my Mom may have a coronary.

Now on to other lessons learned in my life...

This morning I took my Mom on a walk and we saw TWO skunks. I didn't even chase them. I thought I would let my mom think I was over with the whole Skunk thing too. I already found out what skunks can do with their tail raised, and I don't want to go there again. It requires a bath and baths are no fun! Besides, baths are for city dogs, not country dogs like me.

Country dogs love smells and there are just so many living out here where I do! Washing them off really upsets me. I know my Mom doesn't like all the smells I get into. She just can't appreciate the work that is involved in rolling around to cover my whole body. For instance, it is amazing what a cow pie will do to your fur. Then to think all that work is washed away...down the drain...geez. Another smell I just love is a dead animal. Nothing and I mean nothing beats that smell on the o'll coat. It even tends to linger after a couple baths. Well I could go on and on as you may well imagine, but I must get busy. There are rats to kill, squirrels to chase and of course a long afternoon nap in the air conditioned house.

So in closing I would like to say thanks for checking in with me to see how I am. I appreciate all your good thoughts on my recovery. Of course I did play it up long after I was better just to get all those extra hugs/rubs and treats. I kinda think my mom deserves a little break now since she does have to go back to school soon. I promise to mind my manners and stay out of trouble for a little bit.

Until next time!
Captain Jack

It Is So Hot

I think this rabbit says it all. What else can you do when it is 108 degrees? I am sick of the heat and ready for some cooler Fall weather. How about tomorrow?

I can literally watch the plants wilt. I could water 24/7 and they would probably just boil.

Everyday I also have about 6 turkeys that come and stretch out in the yard to cool off. There is no where else to go in this unending Summer heat.
We won't mention what the rabbits eat and what the turkeys destroy by scratching and digging in the garden. It is all just a part of living in the country. I do love most of the critters and I am glad I get to visit with them each day.

My Young Hens Are Laying Eggs

For the last couple of days I have been pleasantly surprised when I went to collect the eggs. The new hens are finally laying eggs! I am so happy!

These little eggs maybe small but look what I found inside of one of them...

A double yoke is always fun to find when an egg is cracked open.

Water Lilies

These water lilies looked so pretty this morning. A bullfrog was sitting on a lily pad but he jumped into the water as soon as I got the camera. Maybe next time. I guess he is camera shy. Late posting as usual. A lot on my mind I guess. Oh well, I hope you all have a great day tomorrow!(-:

Goodbye Kitty

Well the weekend didn't end on a good note. I had to say goodbye to my cat who I have had since he was a kitten. He was 18. It was very sad for me to lose him. I hope the coming week brings some happiness. I hope you all have a good one too!

What Kind Of Bee Is This?

This flying insect was flying around the Datura this morning. I had to grab a picture of this huge thing. Anyone know what type of bee it is? It reminded me of a horse fly.(-:

A New Week

Had to take the picture through the screen door. The bird looks like a fly catcher but not sure.
Glad to see a new week get here. Was ready to end the past week.

Death has never been an easy thing for me. I just can't come to terms with the whole thing of someone being gone forever. I know they are in a better place yada yada. What makes it hard is playing the what ifs through my mind. I know time heals all and I know it will be easier as the days fly by. The whole process just sucks.

Ugh What a Week!

It started off good. I went to another plant sale at Simply Plants on Saturday and got some nice things. A beautiful lilium Penthouse, elfin thyme, sedum, and a dwarf Echinacea. Haven't even planted them yet because of what happened on Monday.

I also made two cement leaf castings. I still havent removed all the old leaf or I would take a picture of those. They turned out pretty cool. I also worked on my kids garden. Decided to keep the theme only rearrange it a bit. I made some cement bricks one set with the saying, Bloom Where You Are Planted, and one set with the kids names on them. Even though said kids (son in law included) are 24, 25 and 28 now, they will always be my kids.(-: Maybe someday I will be able to add my Grandkids names to the garden too! Those little brick making kits you buy are quite fun to do but they only give you one set of alphabet letters. Really you need at least two. But I made one a day and got it all finished up this morning.

Soooooo...on with the worst part of the week.
On Monday I got up early and planned to spend most of the day outside working. I got the hedge pruned and Jack wandered around with me most of the time. He went missing for a bit and I called him and he did not come. Which is normal sometimes for him if he is digging. I was done pruning anyhow so I put up the hedge pruner and went to see what he was up to. Well after looking for 15 or so minuets and no sign of him I thought I would go see if somehow he went inside. Well there on the front porch is where I found him.

I was beside myself as you can imagine. At first it was just the side of his nose so I thought...oh you were stung by a meat bee. He hates meat bees and will chase them and bite them. I took him inside and he went right to the bed and laid down. I sat with him for a while and as I watched his nose got bigger! After about 30 mins I decided it had to be a rattlesnake bite. BY this time though it was to late to take him to the vet for an anti venom shot. Which later I found out that he could have had an epi pen shot. SO if that ever happens again I could always do that.

I applied ice cold wet towels to his nose for the next several hours. My dad had just went through this with his dog just a couple weeks ago. So I knew what he did for his dog. I gave Jack a benedryl and lots of back rubs and tummy rubs and just waited it out. After about 8 hours he seemed to feel a little better and wanted to go outside. That's when I took the pictures. It swelled up a lot more after that but I did not get to take anymore pictures. Jack went potty and came back inside and back to bed.
More ice cold on the nose and we just laid around waiting for him to feel better. Mainly he just slept. I gave him some icecream and canned dog food inbetween times to make him happy. He loved all the attention. Today he is back to his old self. A small bit of swelling on his neck but not noticeable. I never did find the snake. So it is somewhere in the yard waiting for me I suppose.

Hopefully next week goes better. I don't think I would go through another ordeal like that! Enjoy your weekend! ~Cindee

Update:
Thanks for the kind words(-: Jack is doing great and back to his old self.(-: This week has been better, although I found out that someone I knew passed away last week so that added to that terrible week. I am looking forward to next week and things getting more positive around here!(-: Happy Weekend Everyone!!!(-:

Happy July

I have a nest of flycatcher birds in the bird house. They are so cute!

I thought the rabbits looked very pretty with the phlox blooming.

My orange double daylillies. I just can't seem to ever get over how beautiful they are. I got the original ones from my Great Aunt Pauline. Who today would have been 106. Happy Birthday Aunt Pauline!

Fertilizer Friday

Tootsie Time

Welcome to Fertilizer Friday!
Thanks for dropping by!

Here is what is blooming in my garden this week!

First up...a brand new grouping that requires no care but will bloom all Summer. Made from some old heart shaped cake pans that belonged to my Grandmother. They had some rust on them and I decided to make them useful since they were no longer useful for baking cakes. I painted the sign to go with them. I thought it made the whole thing quite charming. I stuck them into a bucket of red geraniums for now. I will find a more permanent place for them later.

This is a new daylily from the All American Daylilies collection called,"Frankly Scarlet." I thought it was a beautiful red and had to have it to add to my daylily collection.

The Crocosemia are blooming like crazy. Love that bright orange!

Last but not least is another new group of cake pan flowers I put together today.
I found these cake pans or jello molds or whatever you want to call them at the flea market for 50 cents each. I really like the ruffled edges.

Thats it for me. I am joining late due to the fact I was still working on my projects till just a bit ago and didn't have pictures yet.

A Fun Day and Some New Plants

My son and I went to a plant sale today at "Simply Plants." It so happens that Yvette, the owner of this lovely business has a daughter who is a friend of my sons.(-: That is how I found out about this business in the first place.
This was my second visit to "Simply Plants." We had a great time visiting Yvette! Thanks for inviting us! We will come back again soon(-:

So...on with the show...Check out what I bought today...

Up first I found this cool Scabiosa. When I got home I noticed the tag was missing so I can't tell you which one it is, but it looks a lot like
Ace of Spades. So until I find out, I will just go with that name.(-:

Next is a plant or should I say bulb I have wanted for a long time. Now hopefully I can keep it going for years to come. This is an Allium Drumstick. Can't wait to see it when it opens(-:

I found this picture on pinterest. I thought they looked a lot like Alliums. Looks like they are made out of chicken wire. I would love to make some of these. I might have to try working on some.(-:

This plant speaks for itself but of course you may not know the name. Which I do so let me share. It is a Echinacea "Hot Summer." I love these plants.(-:

I also got a Chocolate Ball Sedum but I didn't get a close up of it. I will try to do that tomorrow.(-:

Here are some daylily blooms from my garden today. Once again I don't know the names of these but they are pretty so that is really all that matters to me.(-: Names are just words anyhow. I will call these beautiful.(-:
