Sad News

I checked on the Owls this afternoon as usual and one of the baby owls was laying dead on the ground. I told the parents we would have a funeral for it later today. Anyhow, this is about as close as I will ever get to a baby Great Horned Owl. They are so far up the tree there is no way to see them until they grow up and start perching on the branches. Their nest is probably 40 feet off the ground. R.I.P. Baby!

That is sad. I wonder what happened to it.

I didn't realize they were white as chicks. Wish I didn't learn it this way. But that's nature and the others should have a better chance.

I read your title and then held my breath until your blog loaded - I was so worried that something happened to Jack. Whew, thank goodness. I'm so sorry about the baby owl though. Life is tough and short sometimes.

Hi Robins Nesting Place,
I guess this is part of nature. It is sad though. I was really hoping they would all survive.

Hi WiseAcre,
I didn't know they were white either. How interesting. Sad to find that out this way though. I would think they would be brown or grey so they would blend in better.

Hi perennialgardener,
I know I feel really sad for the parents.

Hi My Little Family,
Life is short. We all need to enjoy it more. I am thankful Jack is o.k. too(-: He didn't want to even sniff the baby bird. Either did my granddog Gus. I guess they knew it was a sad moment.

Maybe the larger chicks pushed it out of the nest. That happens sometimes.

how very sad! I hope the others are healthy!

Hi KeeWee,
Where the nest is I don't think they would push each other out because the mom and dad owl are sitting right there. I think something was wrong with it and it died so it was taken out.

Hi Tootsie,
So good to hear from you!!! I hope the babies are o.k. too. I am going to stop by again in a few mins when I take the dogs out for their nightly walk.

Hi flowrgirl1,
Baby birds are so fun to watch but I also worry about them. I hope your nuthatches make it too.

This is so sad - it looks so fluffy and new. Nature can be cruel but it has it's reasons. Sorry Cindee.

Oh...seeing this baby just makes me want to cry. It is so darned cute! It's sad...just plain sad.

Hi Jenn,
It was fluffy. Poor thing. We had a burial for it last night. That is when Jack saw the rat and decided to have a little adventure! He loves to "play" with them which I don't really like but I guess that is his nature. He is a better mouser then the cats. The cats are much to lazy for that activity!(-: They just want a can of tuna to be served to them on a silver platter!(-:

Hi Jan,
It was very sad. I checked this morning and no other babies were on the ground. So that is good! Hopefully the others will be fine. I read on the net where they have two or three babies so hopefully they had three and now they still have two! There is a parent there all the time with them. The mom and dad take turns hunting for food. They are very good parents. To bad more humans can't be as good a parents as the owls are.

oh how sad. It's the part of watching nature that is so hard. Every time a bird builds a nest in my yard I can hardly stand it. It's only exciting about half the time ~ the other half is depressing because of all the occurences that have happened. I've never seen a baby Great Horned Owl. He was beautiful. My dad always tells me it's survival of the fittest in all but the human race.

Hi Kathleen,
Yes it is a difficult time of the year for the baby wildlife. You just gotta hope for the best I guess!!! Happy Friday!!!
